Traveler’s Information

Welcome to Alanana Wild Safaris! We are committed to ensuring that your safari experience is seamless, safe, and unforgettable. This page provides essential travel information to help you prepare for your journey to Tanzania.

1. Entry Requirements & Visa Information

Passport & Visa

  • A valid passport with at least six (6) months validity from the date of arrival is required.
  • Most travelers require a visa to enter Tanzania.
  • Visa on arrival is available at major entry points, but we recommend applying online in advance via the Tanzania eVisa portal for faster processing.
  • Transit visas and multiple-entry visas are also available depending on your travel needs.

Yellow Fever Vaccination

  • Travelers coming from yellow fever-endemic countries must present a yellow fever vaccination certificate upon arrival.
  • Although not mandatory for all travelers, it is recommended to check with your healthcare provider.

2. Best Time to Visit

Tanzania is a year-round destination, but your experience may vary depending on the season:

  • Dry Season (June – October): Best for wildlife viewing in national parks, including the Great Migration in Serengeti.
  • Wet Season (November – May): Lush landscapes, fewer crowds, and excellent birdwatching opportunities. The calving season (January – February) is ideal for witnessing newborn wildlife.

3. Health & Safety

Vaccinations & Medications

  • Recommended vaccinations include Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid, and Tetanus.
  • Malaria is prevalent, so consult your doctor for anti-malarial medication before travel.
  • Carry a basic first-aid kit and necessary prescription medications.

Safety Guidelines

  • Always follow your guide’s instructions during safaris.
  • Keep valuables secure and be cautious in crowded areas.

4. Currency & Payments

  • The local currency is Tanzanian Shilling (TZS), but US Dollars (USD) are widely accepted in hotels and safari lodges.
  • ATMs are available in major cities, but cash is preferred in remote areas.
  • Credit cards are accepted at most lodges, but a 3-5% surcharge may apply.

5. Packing List & Safari Essentials

Clothing

  • Lightweight, neutral-colored clothing (avoid bright colors)
  • A warm jacket for chilly mornings and evenings
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses
  • A rain jacket (especially if visiting during the wet season)

Travel Essentials

  • Binoculars for wildlife viewing
  • Camera with extra batteries & memory cards
  • Sunscreen and insect repellent
  • A reusable water bottle
  • Power adapters (Tanzania uses Type D & G sockets, 230V)

6. Communication & Connectivity

  • Mobile network coverage is available in most areas, but remote safari locations may have limited connectivity.
  • Local SIM cards (Airtel, Vodacom, Tigo) are available for purchase with an unlocked phone.
  • Most lodges and hotels offer Wi-Fi, but speeds may be slow in remote areas.

7. Transportation & Road Conditions

  • Tanzania has a mix of tarmac and gravel roads, with some rough terrain in national parks.
  • Safari vehicles are custom-built 4x4s to handle all terrains.
  • Domestic flights are available for quick transfers between parks.

8. Cultural Etiquette & Local Customs

  • Tanzanians are warm and welcoming greet locals with a smile and handshake.
  • Modest dress is recommended, especially in rural and religious areas.
  • Bargaining is common in local markets but should be done politely.
  • Public displays of affection should be minimal.

9. Travel Insurance

We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance covering:

  • Medical emergencies & evacuation
  • Trip cancellations & delays
  • Lost or stolen baggage
  • Personal liability

10. Emergency Contacts

Local Emergency Numbers

  • Police: 112
  • Ambulance: 114
